The Spanish Collection comprises the archives of the International Brigade Association and those of individual Brigaders. It documents the Aid Spain campaign in the UK and abroad – a grass roots response to the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 –, the experiences of Brigaders fighting in Spain and subsequent campaigns against the Franco dictatorship. It includes photographs, diaries, correspondence, printed ephemera, periodicals and artefacts.
The Spanish Collection's photo library is a unique resource of around 1,500 photographic prints covering the Spanish Civil War, the Aid Spain Movement, subsequent Anti-Franco campaigns and memorials and re-unions. The MML is undertaking an ambitious digitisation project and presents here a sample of the images available at the MML, marking 80 years since the formation of the International Brigades. These images form part of the Spanish Collection, our phenomenal archive donated to the MML by the International Brigade Association, and added to by many families of brigaders over the years. Where the images are unattributed, efforts have been made to trace the copyright holder.
